Family and Youth Programming at the Carnegie

Scroll down to see the Carnegie’s offerings for youth and family programming that are always free and open to the public. Many programs are monthly but be sure to check our Events Page and the Library’s Calendar for exact dates and times.

Open Studio

Open Studio is an artmaking program on the fourth Thursday of each month from 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m. Join us at the Carnegie Center for Art & History for independently-led artmaking inspired by art on view in the galleries. Check the Events Page and the Library Calendar for descriptions of monthly projects! Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome.

Children’s Wall Labels

The Carnegie Center for Art & History features wall labels for children to read in our exhibitions. We place these labels at a lower height with clear and accessible information for young visitors to learn and engage with while making meaningful and fun connections.

Family Tours

Join us at the Carnegie Center for Art & History on the 4th Thursday of each month at 5 p.m. for a Family Tour designed especially for children and families! Family Tours are a playful and engaging way to spend time together and learn about our current exhibitions. Registration is encouraged but drop-ins are welcome!

The Carnegie Center has a new friend named Tink who likes to hang out in the Tinkerspace! Tink loves art and will happily share some knowledge with you if you come for a visit. You can find Tink coloring pages in the Tinkerspace!

Visit the Tinkerspace in the hallway that leads to the Newkirk Gallery to find rotating activities inspired by current art exhibitions. Some activities include coloring pages, magnet play, and more! Be sure to come back to each new exhibition to see what we have in store for you!

Gallery Games

Looking for fun activities for your visit to the Carnegie? Try our Gallery Games to find details and talk about art! These flip card activities are fun for all ages. Gallery Games encourage close looking, reflecting, conversation, and some creativity! You can find a couple of sets of these games close to our reception desk on the wall of the East Gallery and, for our friends with some extra energy, our “In Motion” Gallery Games are in the Tinkerspace. Which game will you play?

Gallery Activity Bags

Gallery Activity Bags create an interactive and fun experience that activates the galleries and is entirely self-led. Activity Bags can be retrieved from a designated area by the Spring Street entrance and used with any art exhibition! These bags offer a range of activities based on age (from babies to adults) and occasion.
